About Sabra
Sabra (サブラ) is a Japanese magazine published bi-weekly by
Shogakukan. Started on May 25th 2000, at only 230 yen.
Shogakukan is a Japanese publisher of dictionaries, literature, manga,
nonfiction, children's DVDs, and other media in Japan.
Shogakukan founded Shueisha which founded Hakusensha. These are three separate
companies, but are together called the Hitotsubashi group, one of the biggest
publishing groups in Japan. Shogakukan is located at Hitotsubashi, Chiyoda,
Tokyo, and the other two companies are located in the same ward.
Compared to occidental magazines, it closely resembles Maxim and FHM,
featuring articles on sports, fashion, technology, cars and girls.
Compared to other similar Japanese magazines, Sabra features a lot more
articles and editorials than other magazines like Up to Boy. No nudity is
portrayed and it can be sold on eBay or grocery stores, unlike Urecco or Bejean.
Also, the format is adequate because it is not as small as Bomb magazine.
With an average price of 500 yen, it may be a little expensive, but paper
quality and the Sabra DVD included on each edition make up for the steep price.
It's target audience is young men and it features gravure idols and
Japanese
models in sexy pictorials with no nudity whatsoever.
Among the models published are famous Japanese girls such as Yuko Ogura,
Megumi, Yoko Matsugane, Yinling of Joytoy, Aki Hoshino, Yoko Kumada, Jun
Natsukawa, Misako Yasuda, Sakaya Isoyama and many more.
In my country, Mexico, it's impossible to find Sabra magazine. Thankfully, on
the internet and eBay it's possible to obtain the current issue and back issues
of the magazine.
Special editions
Sabra publishes also special edition books (or mooks, a
magazine/book), which feature a model or models excusably with no advertising.
This are more expensive (around 2000 yen) but the paper quality is superb and
most recent editions include now a making of DVD.
Another type of special edition is the Very Best/Girls
Excellent collection. This type of special edition compiles the best pictorials
of the year, featuring the most famous Sabra idols. This type of mook is the
best choice if you can't obtain every regular issue.
